Excavation-restoration of two towers in Alcalá la Vieja, Alcalá de Henares
XNUMXth to XNUMXth century
Reasons justifying the intervention
Alcalá la Vieja is a very important fortress of Hispanic-Muslim origin, whose construction dates from the XNUMXth-XNUMXth centuries, integrating into the defensive system of the Middle March or border of Al-Andalus. Its importance derives from its location on the communication route between Toledo and Zaragoza. After a few centuries of occupation, from the XNUMXth century the fortress gradually deteriorated due to neglect.
The General Directorate of Cultural Heritage has been working for several years on the site that is included in the Visitable Sites Plan, and the interventions, in addition to promoting research and conservation, will serve to improve accessibility and understanding of it. For this, the preparation of accesses, the excavation and the rehabilitation of structures are contemplated.
So far, a large part of the main canvas of the wall and towers 1 to 4 have been recovered.
During 2022, it is proposed to intervene in two of the towers, numbers 6 (tower lying down, which was blown up in 1838) and 9 (albarrana tower to the south of the enclosure) which present a very compromised state of conservation and urgently need to be intervened. To do this, it will be excavated around it and the structures will be consolidated.
