
Architects of Madrid: Carlos Rubio
Associated with Enrique Álvarez-Sala in the R&AS studio, and initially also with César Ruiz-Larrea, he has developed numerous national and international projects. He currently works in his own studio, Rubio Arquitectos, founded in 2014.

Carlos Rubio (Barcelona, 1950)
Born in Barcelona in 1950, he obtained his degree in 1977 at the Madrid Higher Technical School of Architecture, a center where he has been an associate professor of projects since 1978. This teaching aspect has also led him to teach classes internationally, at the universities of Cagliari and Turin. In his training, Rubio himself highlights the figure of his uncle Francisco Javier Carvajal (1926-2013), one of the protagonists of the development of Madrid's architecture during the second half of the XNUMXth century and author of the Valencia tower next to El Park. He has appeared in leading national architecture magazines and international reference publications such as Baumeister, The Architectural Review, Domus and Casabella, and has received numerous awards such as the Veronica Rudge Green Award from Harvard University in 2015, the Green Urban Planning / Landscape Architecture Award 2013, the International Architecture Award 2012. Works
Carlos Rubio's works at R&AS include the INDRA company buildings in Alcobendas, Torrejón and Barcelona (the last finalist in the 2007 Architecture FADs) and the PwC Tower, one of the four skyscrapers that have redefined the profile of Madrid from the new business area built in the north of Madrid.
With a height of 236 meters and 58 plants (the third tallest skyscraper in Spain), in the only tower built by Spanish architects has been taken into account the energy sustainability through the system of envelopes composed of glass and aluminum plates that contributes to better isolation.
In addition, also in Madrid, Rubio, in collaboration with Burgos & Garrido and Porras La Casta, won the first prize in the competition called to reform the banks of the Manzanares after the M-30 burial, Madrid Río, a large-scale intervention in which they participate various studies.
The project, in addition to overpasses, bridges, garden areas and leisure spaces, includes the Manzanares River Interpretation Center and the building of the new police station in the area. The Madrid Río environment has been recognized with almost twenty national and international awards, including the CICA 2011 or the FAD 2012.
The project for the reform of the Plaza de la Cebada also stands out among the facilities. winning project in the international competition called for the purpose.
At the end of 2016, the joint project presented by Rubio and Norman Foster's studios was awarded to rehabilitate and adapt the Salón de Reinos, the former Army Museum, as a museum space attached to the campus of the Museo del Museo del Meadow. This work will involve 2.500 m2 more exhibition area and pedestrianization of the area's surroundings. Its start is expected in 2019, coinciding with the museum's bicentennial.
In the residential, single-family or collective environment, it has developed homes such as Las Villas in Arturo Soria, the Cigüeñas residential complex in Vallecas, in Bravo Murillo 86, in Tres Cantos (COAM 1990 award), Leganés, Colmenar Viejo, El Escorial or on the island of Chamartín. Office buildings are also noteworthy, such as the one located on Calle Condesa de Venadito in Madrid.
